Daniel Murphy’s breakout comes with a blooper reel

Daniel Murphy finally had a big night at the plate, but that was obscured Sunday by his two biggest foes — defense and base running.

The beleaguered Mets second baseman smacked two doubles for two RBIs and reached base three times in his team’s 6-4 loss to the Yankees. The flip side was the fielding error he made that led to an unearned run in the fifth. An inning later, Murphy failed to slide into second base, and was easily tagged out by Gregorio Petit after the second baseman came off the bag receiving Stephen Drew’s flip.

Murphy’s error on Chris Young’s grounder was one of four committed by the Mets.
