Knicks News: J.R. Smith "sad" over Mike Woodson firing

In Knicks news tonight,  J.R. Smith isn't exactly thrilled with the New York Knicks' decision to fire Mike Woodson as head coach.

Per Ian Begley of ESPN.com, Smith was aware of the probability that Woodson would be let go, yet still feels hurt over the turn of events:

"It is sad,” Smith told ESPN’s Josina Anderson as cited in Begley's article. “He was great to me. I think I got a fair shake for the first time in awhile under him. He treated me how he wanted to be treated. It sucks, but there is nothing I can do about it."

Despite Woodson and Smith not seeing eye-to-eye at point during Woodson's two-and-a-half years with the Knicks, Smith genuinely enjoyed playing for the beleaguered coach: "I think he did a great job," Smith stated. "I think he did a good job with me. He responded to the players. It's just a sad day for him, for me and my teammates."

When asked if it was fair that new president Phil Jackson came in and let go the entire coaching staff, Smith didn't have a direct answer: “I don't know what is fair or not. I'm not the person dealing with fair or not. It would've been nice to see him get another year at least, but Phil Jackson has won a lot of championships and knows basketball, so we have to trust in that," Smith stated.
