How Jets prevented Brian Winters from hitting free agency

After a miserable 5-11 season, the Jets are off to a promising start this offseason -- albeit with just one major move.

On Monday, they gave right guard Brian Winters a four-year contract extension. It is worth $29 million ($7.25 million per year), with $15 million guaranteed. ESPN first reported those contract details.

The structure of Winters' guaranteed money isn't yet clear. (Does any trickle over into his contract's third year?) But the deal's average annual value and guaranteed pay both rank (for now) ninth among guards, according to Spotrac.
