Islanders lock up first win as Brooklyn residents

Win No. 1 in Brooklyn is in the books, and the Islanders did it in rather impressive fashion.

After going 0-1-1 in the opening home-and-home with the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks, the Islanders played host to the Jets in their second regular-season game at Barclays Center, finding a way to hold on for a 4-2 victory Monday in their annual Columbus Day matinee.

The play was a bit sluggish to start, but the Islanders found their legs late in the first period and held the play well into the third period. But the energetic — if small — crowd grew concerned with just over eight minutes remaining in the third when Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien — who didn’t take long to make himself a villain in another arena — scored on a long power-play shot to cut the Isles lead to 3-2.
