Wellington Mara dies at 89 of cancer in 2005

The sports world lost a Giant yesterday.

Wellington Mara died at 89. The Giants' co-owner and one of New York sports' last icons peacefully succumbed to cancer at his home in Rye, surrounded by his wife of 51 years, Ann, their 11 children and many of their 40 grandchildren.

His legacy, like his family, is huge.

"Wellington Mara represented the heart and soul of the National Football League," said commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
