UNM sports: Time for these track and field athletes to shine; baseball wraps up home schedule

FRESNO, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s and women’s track teams are competing in the Mountain West Conference meet at Fresno State’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. Events, mostly preliminaries, were to begin late Thursday. Among the Lobos to watch:

  • Ethan Brouw, top ranked among league men in 800 meters;
  • Jake Burkey, league indoor long jump champion who has been injured and will be making his outdoor season debut;
  • Jonathan Carmin, league indoor 5,000 champ, will also run the 1,500;
  • Maisie Grice, whose only 3,000-meter steeplechase race of the season was third fastest in the league and 15th best nationally;
  • Emma Heckel, a reigning all-league and All-American in the women’s 5,000;
  • Tianna Holmes, the UNM women’s 200 and 400 record-holder;
  • Gracelyn Larkin, reigning 5,000 champion;
  • Amelia Mazza-Downie, the league’s top 10,000 runner who will enter the women’s 5,000;
  • Javon O’Bryant, the reigning 400 outdoor champ, also will run the 200 and 4×400;
  • Stephanie Parsons, three-time league athlete of the week coming off her season-best time in the 1,500;
  • Aidan Quinn, four-time league triple jump champ, also long-jumping;
  • Elise Thorner, reigning women’s 1,500 champ;
  • Jovahn Williamson, reigning men’s 200 champ, will run also in the 400 and 4×400;
  • Brodie Young, a freshman with the league’s top 400 time.
