U.S. reaches world quarterfinals with OT loss to Slovakia

The U.S. got just what it needed to advance.

With its 3-2 overtime loss to Slovakia in Tuesday’s preliminary round finale, Team USA picked up a point to advance to the quarterfinals at the IIHF World Championship.

Keith Kinkaid made 27 saves and David Warsofsky collected a power-play assist to help secure a matchup with Group A winners, the Czech Republic.

"We both knew something was on the line, and the game was competitive," coach John Hynes told USA Hockey’s official site. "We are glad to have the opportunity to move on.
