Calvin Johnson-to-Patriots trade rumors likely dead for good; 30-year-old WR could retire this week

It was never going to happen, but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun to play around with the trade rumors.

Calvin Johnson, arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL the past few seasons (when healthy), was a potential cap casualty for the Detroit Lions. Sure, it would've been silly for the Lions to part with him, but teams have made dumber decisions. (See: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cutting Darrelle Revis.)

Nine years after by trading for Randy Moss on the cheap, there was some underlying wishful thinking in New England (mostly on social media and in sports talk circles) that this team could revamp the offense like they did after the 2006 seasons.
