Tommy Watanabe, a 20-year-old baseball player set to join the Wolf Pack in the fall, died suddenly in his sleep Saturday night after his mom found him unresponsive in his family home near Sacramento.

There were no signs Watanabe was ill, and his death came as a shock to his family. No cause of death has been disclosed.

“I talked to his family the day he died … and they said he had been happy as could be,” family friend Spencer Lininger told the San Mateo Daily Journal.

Watanabe’s mother, Cindy, told the CBS Sacramento her son spent last Friday hanging out with friends in his hometown of Gold River but never woke up after going to sleep that night.
