How Expanded Instant Replay Has Hurt The NBA

How the expanded use of instant replay has led to more flagrant foul calls that has created more controversy during games.

Since the NBA instituted instant replay during the 2002-03 playoffs, basketball hasn’t been the same. Its expanded use over time has changed the game as teams, players, and spectators used to know it.

Starting in 2007-2008, the referees were given the ability to review all player altercations; since 2008-2009 all questioned field goal attempts (whether a 2 or 3-point goal) were reviewed; in 2012-2013 referees were able to review as to whether a foul was a block or a charge based on video of the defender and whether his feet were in the restricted area.
