Fidel Castro dies; used sports to promote Cuba

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro has died at age 90, his brother, President Raul Castro announced late Friday on state television in Havana.

The death of Castro, who ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008, comes a little more than a year after Cuba and the United States resumed diplomatic relations following 50 years of Cold War hostility.

The centerpiece of the détente saw President Obama travel to the island nation to see the Tampa Bay Rays play a baseball game against the Cuban national team last March. It was the first time a major league team played in Cuba since 1999.
