When life got tough, Springfield's next basketball superstar worked on his jump shot

Anton Brookshire shoots hoops to take his mind off things.

Since he was a kid growing up in Milwaukee, the now-Springfield freshman phenom found sanctuary on the court.

For most of his life, Brookshire's mother has been sick. She suffers from the systemic autoimmune disease known as lupus.

Her bones hurt. She can't get around very well.

Brookshire used to make her hot tea every morning before he walked to school.

He worried about her. And, like therapy, he perfected his jump shot.

"Basketball is something I would go to when something's not going the right way," Brookshire said.
