Late spring makes for slow turkey season

Ozark hunter Michael Heffernon shot a new Missouri record turkey on opening day of spring turkey season Wes Johnson/News-Leader

The 2018 turkey season ended Sunday on one of the best days of the season. It was still the same story for many hunters, since the gobblers went silent, for the most part.

In spite of the weather and lack of gobbling, hunters were able to harvest 35,778 bearded birds during the three-week season. Of the total, 29,908 were adult gobblers, 5,864 young gobblers and 506 bearded hens. Franklin was the top county with 760 birds checked.
