Vikings coach Mike Zimmer leaves team to be with ailing father

MANKATO, Minn. -- Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he won't be at training camp for Tuesday's practice because his father is ailing.

Zimmer told the team after Monday's workout he would leave Mankato and then told reporters, adding that offensive coordinator Norv Turner will lead Tuesday's practice. The coach's father, Bill Zimmer, 84, lives in Naples, Fla.

"He was kind of emotional about it," running back Matt Asiata said of Zimmer talking to the team. "He was trying to hold something in. We felt that about him. We respect him a lot."

Asiata's father, Pita Asiata, died in a bus accident in Utah in 2013.
