Twins plan to activate Gibson, move Hughes to bullpen

OAKLAND -- The Twins plan to activate right-hander Kyle Gibson from the 15-day disabled list to start on Thursday against the Rays. In a surprising decision, veteran right-hander Phil Hughes will head to the bullpen in long relief to make room for Gibson in the rotation.

Gibson, on the DL retroactive to April 23 with a right shoulder strain, made his second rehab start with Class A Advanced Fort Myers on Friday, with general manager Terry Ryan in attendance. Gibson gave up one run over five innings with six strikeouts while throwing 72 pitches.

The Twins determined he was ready after two rehab outings, and he threw a bullpen session on Monday to get ready for Thursday's start.
