Perkins likely to avoid DL with back spasms

ST. PETERSBURG -- Twins closer Glen Perkins remains day to day with lower back spasms, as manager Paul Molitor said Perkins felt better on Thursday, but wasn't counting on him to be available to pitch against the Rays.

Perkins first started feeling spasms while warming up before his appearance against the Orioles on Sunday, but he was able to get through a scoreless inning. It's unrelated to the neck issue that caused the All-Star to miss five games before his return on Sunday.

Perkins was able to throw and move around before Thursday's game, but Molitor said it's hard to predict when the back issues will fully calm down.
