May will start season in Twins' bullpen

"We are going to put him in the bullpen," Ryan said. "I don't know how they'll use him. If he throws two innings, three innings, I don't care. I kind of like those multi-inning relievers."

Ryan wasn't present for the meeting on Wednesday, as it was manager Paul Molitor and pitching coach Neil Allen who told May of the decision, but he heard the 26-year-old took the news well.

"He took it with respect of the manager and the pitching coach," Ryan said. "I don't know if he's pleased, but he took it the right way."

May pitched in both roles last year, combining to go 8-9 with a 4.
