U-M OL Kalis glad switched from OSU; still hears about it

Kyle Kalis had only lived in Ohio a few years, but as an all-state offensive lineman at Lakewood St. Edward in high school, he understood the passion of the state's people. Or thought he did.

He committed early to Ohio State and then-coach Jim Tressel. But after Tressel was ousted because of an NCAA scandal, Kalis rescinded his commitment, saying he didn't want to play under NCAA sanctions.

Michigan's Greg Mattison swayed him to Michigan in June 2011, when Kalis made his infamous comment to ESPN: "I believe the Michigan-Ohio border is now open."

The fallout was substantial, especially for a kid who still had a year to play in the state.
