Michigan coach Bill Frieder wasn’t allowed to coach the team because he had taken a job at Arizona State, so assistant coach Steve Fisher was asked to take over by then athletic director Bo Schembechler.
All he did was lead the team to the title with an 80-79 overtime victory over Seton Hall in Seattle.
