Michigan softball’s Abby Ramirez cranks lineup from bottom

Abby Ramirez has a secret.

It’s not noticeable watching Michigan softball’s 5-foot-4 shortstop take her cuts. Or talking to her about what stands out in her game.

But in a lineup of power hitters — the Wolverines’ other seven regulars have between six and 19 home runs — Ramirez doesn’t have one homer.

It’s not surprising for a player called “a slapper,” in softball speak, whose job is to run at the ball and put it in play. But don’t tell that to her extended family.

“It’s still hard,” her father, Ruben Ramirez, said this week.
