Michigan Football: Brian Smith to Coach Defensive Backs

Multiple outlets are reporting that Michigan has filled the defensive backs coaching position vacated by Greg Jackson by hiring Philadelphia Eagles assistant linebackers coach Brian Smith. He will join Mike Zordich at working the position.

Jackson was likely hired because of his connection to the Wolverines’ new defensive coordinator Don Brown. Jackson played for Brown at UMass in the late 90s. In 2004, he was hired by Brown as a linebackers coach at UMass. He stayed with the team for three years, including the team’s trip to the 2006 FCS Championship game.

In 2007 he was hired by the New York Jets under Eric Mangini.
