Michigan alum, football recruit commit NCAA violations on Twitter, again

Former Michigan TE Kevin Koger, who played for the Wolverines from 2008-2011, committed a secondary NCAA violation buy communicating with a high school recruit via Twitter. This is the 4th time Michigan football has come under fire due to Twitter in 2012.

Koger, who went undrafted in April's NFL draft after tearing his Achilles heel in March, tweeted back in response to 2013 Michigan football running back Wyatt Shallman on Wednesday, July 4th.

***UPDATE 7/9/12***

Confirmed with the NCAA, at readers request, that this is indeed a violation. SEE RULES HERE

"Boosters, referred to by the NCAA as “representatives of the institution’s athletic interests,” include anyone who has:

• Participated in or has been a member of an organization promoting the university’s athletics programs."

Shallman tweeted a picture of Koger in Michigan uniform and tagged the former TE in the tweet. Koger, who should have responded privately, publicly responded to the 17 year old RB from Detroit.

I know this is 'no big deal' and harmless, but it isn't my job to decide the rules, just to report when they are broken.

This is not the first time Michigan has been caught up in controversy over Twitter. In January, our own Ace Williams broke a national controversy when he broke the news that CB recruit Yuri Wright was no longer being recruited by Michigan due to his racy Twitter account.

In February, I contributed in an article with 3 other writers, showing that Yuri was not the only recruit with negative behavior on Twitter and published the public, racy tweets of the 2012 Michigan football recruiting class.

Then in March, WR Roy Roundtree tweeted to another 2013 recruit, Mike McCray.

My advice to Brady Hoke and Dave Brandon: Wake up and get your house in order.
