Michigan Football: Jim Harbaugh Says "Meritocracy" Will Determine Starting QB

Michigan football is set to start spring practice on February 24, and the biggest question surrounding the program is who will start under center.

Junior Shane Morris, redshirt freshman Wilton Speight, and true Alex Malzone (who enrolled early) will be competing for the job this spring, but they'll be joined by four-star freshman Zach Gentry and Houston transfer John O’Korn in the summer (O'Korn will be ineligible this season due to transfer rules).

New head coach Jim Harbaugh has made this a wide open competition and each player is going to have to prove themselves.

"Who moves the team the best, who avoids turnovers, who takes care of the football, who can rally his team," Harbaugh said. "All that will be played out on the football field. It will be a meritocracy at its best."

Harbaugh dove deep into the dictionary for that one, but Merriam-Webster defines meritocracy as "a system in which the talented are chosen and moved ahead on the basis of their achievement."

Michigan quarterbacks combined for just 10 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions last season.
