3 Things We Learned About Michigan In The Opening Loss To Utah

The Michigan Wolverines lost to the Utah Utes 24-17 in Jim Harbaugh's first game as head coach. The Wolverines made it a game, but Utah denied Harbaugh his first win with the Wolverines. Here are three things we learned in Michigan's season opener.

Jake Butt Is Going To Have A Big Year

The talented TE caught eight passes for 93 yards and a score. He was Rudock's favorite target all night and should be for most of the season. Amara Darboh played well and Jehu Chesson should have put up big numbers had Rudock connected with him, but Butt impressed me the most. Butt was consistent all game long and looked solid as a blocker. The kind of night Butt had against Utah could be his standard game going forward.

Jake Rudock Must Play Better

Rudock is the starter, and Harbaugh keeping him in the whole game means he should be going forward. But Rudock must play better in the next game. He was supposed to be a game manager, someone who wouldn't turn the ball over. However, Rudock threw three picks, matching his career high. One was a miscommunication, but the other two were on Rudock. He only threw five picks last season with Iowa. He missed a wide-open Chesson twice on plays that were going to be touchdowns. If Michigan wants to win, Rudock will have to improve on his performance. Completing 27 of 43 passes for 279 yards, two TDs and three picks just won't cut it. He showed poise late and hopefully that's a sign of things to come.

Rebuilding Will Take Time

Maybe we already knew this one. But seeing Utah defeat Michigan makes it a tangible reality. Michigan struggled running the ball, but that might be more because of Utah's talent up front than Michigan's offensive line. More running success will make things easier on Rudock. But even if that happens, Michigan isn't likely to suddenly turn it around and win the Big Ten. The Wolverines showed great effort late and gave themselves a chance, which was good to see. Harbaugh will get things turned around; it will just take some time.
