Michigan State holds on late to top Indiana in Big Ten opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State made its first Big Ten road trip of the season and headed home with a rivalry trophy.

The No. 24 Spartans (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated Indiana (3-1, 0-1) 35-21 on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium to retain the Old Brass Spittoon.

Michigan State, which was coming off a bye week, overcame turnovers, costly penalties and more rushing struggles with a defensive score and a trick play, then held on late to hand the Hoosiers their first loss of the season.

Cornerback Shakur Brown returned an interception for a touchdown in the first half while kicker Matt Coghlin scored on a fake field goal in the second half.
