Iowa 83, MSU 70: No. 1 Spartans lose first of season

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Top-ranked Michigan State simply didn't have enough for another big comeback.

The Spartans looked sloppy and sluggish offensively in their first blemish of the season – an 83-70 loss to Iowa tonight in the Big Ten opener. MSU's 13-0 start was the best in school history.

The loss came just a day after MSU coach Tom Izzo's father, Carl, died.

Eron Harris scored 21 points and Matt Costello tied his career-high 17 to lead the Spartans (13-1, 0-1 Big Ten), who were playing their second game without star Denzel Valentine.

Iowa's Mike Gesell had a career-high 25 points.
