In wake of Nassar sex-abuse scandal, Michigan State medical clinics change policy

In response to allegations one of its doctors sexually abused patients for years, Michigan State University is tightening requirements at its medical clinics regarding use of chaperones and obtaining "informed consent" from patients.

The new policies specifically address procedures that involve vaginal and/or rectal penetration, treatments that are at the center of the controversy involving Dr. Larry Nassar, a MSU sports-medicine doctor fired last September.

Under the new policies, practitioners performing such treatments must use gloves and get written "informed consent" from the patient and, in the case of minors, their parents.

There also must be a third party in the room during such procedures, the new policies say.
