Al Ferrari, MSU's first 1,000-point scorer, dies

Al Ferrari, a three-time Michigan State basketball most valuable player and the school’s first 1,000-point scorer, died Monday in St. Louis. He was 82.

Ferrari arrived in East Lansing as a walk-on from Brooklyn and played for Pete Newell from 1952-55. The 6-foot-4 swingman – nicknamed “Moose” at MSU and “Bronco” in the pros – averaged 16.8 a game for his three-year career and remains 41st on MSU’s all-time scoring list with 1,109 points. He averaged 20.1 points a game as a senior in 1954-55.
