Michigan State baseball misses NCAA tournament field after losing four of final five games

EAST LANSING — The Big Ten landed five teams in the NCAA baseball tournament field, but Michigan State wasn't one of them after losing four of its final five games this season.

The Spartans finished the season 34-23 and tied for third place in the Big Ten regular season, but it wasn't enough to earn an at-large bid.

Michigan earned the Big Ten's automatic bid by winning the Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis, while Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Indiana were all awarded at-large berths to the NCAA tournament.

"Michigan State had a nice season,'' said NCAA Division I baseball selection committee chairman Dave Heeke, who's also the Central Michigan athletic director.
