After optioning Tomas Telis to Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday, the Marlins are playing with a short bench. Scott McGough was selected in the corresponding move, and according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the Marlins wanted additional relief depth.
The Marlins' pitching staff has been hit hard by injuries. McGough adds a fresh arm to a tired bullpen.
Miami considered promoting McGough on Monday, when David Phelps (stress fracture right radius bone) was placed on the disabled list.
