Home Runs Prove Costly in 10-8 Loss to Valparaiso

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – On the windiest day of the first series of the season, with massive gusts out towards centerfield, the Memphis Tigers (2-1) and Valparaiso Beacons (1-2) combined for seven home runs, as the Beacons avoided a sweep with a 10-8 victory.

Memphis: 8, Valparaiso: 10

How it happened:

  • Memphis struck early against LHP Jake Miller, (W, 1-0), as SS Ben Brooks connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the first inning
  • The Beacons quickly got back in the game, as they plated a pair of runs on four hits in the second frame against RHP Carson Stinnett (L, 0-1), while a home run by 3B Kaleb Hannahs to lead off the third put Valparaiso in front
  • After both starters settled in, the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, as three straight batters reached with two outs and 1B Jacob Compton leveled the game 3-3 with an RBI single, one of his three hits on the day
  • Valparaiso responded immediately against Stinnett and RHP Jackson Lyons in the sixth, as the Beacons sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run frame
  • Stinnett allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings, while Lyons allowed five runs, two earned, on three hits in just 0.
