Big Inning Looms Large in 10-4 Loss to Mississippi State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers (12-9) battled through Tuesday's matchup with rival Mississippi State (16-10) and held a 4-0 lead through five innings, but a six-run sixth frame for the Bulldogs proved to be too much, as the Tigers fell 10-4 in front of 4,525 fans at AutoZone Park.

Memphis: 4, Mississippi State: 10
WP: Mikey Tepper (1-0)
LP: JT Durham (0-1)
SV: Jackson Fristoe (1)

How it happened:

  • RHP Landon Gartman (ND) walked one and hit a batter in the first, but didn't allow a run or a hit over four innings
  • The Tigers struck first, as RF Blake Daniels led off the third with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by 3B Logan Kohler; Memphis led 1-0 after three innings
  • Memphis added two more in the fourth, both with two outs, as 1B Chris Swanberg got the two-out rally started with a single, 2B Austin Baskin walked, and both scored on CF Zach Wilson's second triple of the season, which put Memphis in front 3-0
  • SS Ben Brooks drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and DH Jacob Compton picked up his team-leading 21st RBI with a single that gave Memphis a 4-0 lead
  • The Mississippi State offense, which averages more than eight runs per game, got going once the Tigers moved to the bullpen
  • After a scoreless fifth frame, Durham recorded just one out over six batters in the sixth, and all five batters that reached against the lefty scored, as Mississippi State batted around in the frame, plated six runs, and led 6-4
  • The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh on a bases loaded hit by pitch and three more in the eighth against the Memphis bullpen, which put them ahead 10-4, the eventual final

Notables:

  • Brooks had Memphis' only multi-hit performance, his seventh multi-hit game of the season, third most on the team
  • With his fourth inning single, Swanberg extended his hit streak to seven games, the longest active streak on the team
  • Swanberg extended his on-base streak to 11 games while Compton has now reached base safely in 16 straight games
