A fired Randy Edsall was Maryland’s highest-paid state employee in 2016

It’s not uncommon for a football coach to be the highest-paid employee in a state, but hardly ever does that distinction go to someone who’s already been fired.

Maryland paid Randy Edsall $2,673,000 in 2016. He was fired in October 2015.

The Baltimore Sun’s salary database of state employees shows Edsall just $24,000 ahead of Maryland basketball coach Mark Turgeon for the top spot. Edsall’s replacement, DJ Durkin, sits in third place at over $2.4 million. Women’s basketball head coach Brenda Frese is the only other state employee in seven figures at $1.
