When I got into the media business about a thousand years ago, I set some basic ground rules – some do’s and don’ts to guide me as I found my way in the profession.
One of those rules is that you don’t get too chummy with the people you cover. Always be friendly, cordial and professional, one of my mentors taught me as a young reporter. Don’t ever pull for teams. Rarely, and under the most unusual of circumstances, it is OK to pull for people. But don’t make a habit of it.
I am invoking that exception clause today because after visiting him this spring and watching him work this summer, I’m pulling for Les Miles.
