ST. JOSEPH, MO. • Alex Smith tread lightly on the subject Wednesday when asked about Colin Kaepernick's situation.
They were teammates, of course, with the San Francisco 49ers for two seasons, and when Smith left with a concussion in a Nov. 11, 2012 game against the visiting St. Louis Rams it opened the door for Kaepernick.
Kaepnernick took the 49ers to the Super Bowl that season, where they narrowly lost to Baltimore 34-31. Smith was traded to Kansas City the following offseason and has since flourished with the Chiefs.
"You know, a lot changed obviously in those few years I'd been gone and came here and everything that's gone on since," Smith said.
