Derek Fisher is fired as New York Knicks coach by his mentor, team President Phil Jackson

Derek Fisher, a former Lakers guard won who five NBA championships with the team, was fired as the coach of the New York Knicks on Monday by the very man he played for in L.A.

Knicks President Phil Jackson, who coached all five of the Lakers championship teams Fisher played for, said that associate head coach Kurt Rambis, a former Lakers player and assistant coach under Jackson, would be the Knicks' interim head coach at least until the end of this season.

Fisher lasted only 1 1/2 seasons with the Knicks, who lost nine of the last 10 games he coached, falling to 12th in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
