In a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns, the Lakers land two-time NBA MVP point guard Steve Nash. The Lakers acquiring Steve Nash provides a huge boost to their starting lineup. With Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant in the backcourt, and Metta World Peace, Andrew Bynum along with Pau Gasol in the frontcourt, the Lakers have increased their chances of continuing to compete at a high level in the Western Conference.
Certainly, Steve Nash will fill the Lakers void at point guard, which they desperately needed. He is currently 38 years old and will add maturity to a Lakers team that sometimes lacked in that department during the season. In addition to his maturity, he will become an instant team leader not just off the court, but on it as well being the point guard. His play on the court, including his vision and ability to knock down jump shots, will free up Bynum and Gasol in the paint as well as take some pressure off of Kobe in the backcourt.
Steve Nash coming to the Lakers does not guarantee that the Lakers jump ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder as the best team in the Western Conference, but it narrows the gap between the two teams. Improving the play at point guard for the Lakers was the top priority. Besides getting Deron Williams, Steve Nash was the next best option at point guard and they needed to get one of the two. The Lakers can now feel as though they have put together a solid starting lineup, and they can now shift their attention to improving the bench for the rest of the offseason. Who knows, maybe acquiring Nash may lead to a couple more championship runs for the Lakers.
