Whicker: NLCS Game 6 evokes Cubs memories of Steve Bartman

The Cubs fan’s hand will be wrapped around a cold one, even on a 45-degree night.

Or it will be gripping someone’s shoulder, even a stranger’s, for emotional traction.

Mostly, that fan’s hand will be encouraged to mind its own business.

Fourteen years ago, the Chicago Cubs came home with a 3-2 lead in the National League Championship Series, with at least as much hope as the 2016 Cubs on Saturday night. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, their two best arms, were pitching Games 6 and 7.

“People talk about electricity, but this was like lightning bolts with thunder mixed in,” said ESPN’s Doug Glanville, then a Cubs outfielder who won Game 3 with a pinch-hit triple.
