Column: Ex-Chargers great Ed White reports huge health gain, from innovative heart procedure

Big Ed White was easily heard Wednesday, his voice filling a large room.

Handed a football, Big Ed made it look small. He laughed, he slapped hands, he riffed on football and art. “I feel great,” said White, who 40 years ago blocked as a Pro Bowl guard for the famed “Air Coryell” Chargers.

Next to Big Ed sat Little Paul.

That’s Ed’s nickname for heart doctor Paul Teirstein of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where the two chatted and slapped hands.

“He’s the best,” White said.

Just 20 hours earlier, Teirstein had restored full blood flow to White by placing a new valve in his aorta.
