In the long room of the Le Montreux Palace, a plush hotel on the banks of Lake Geneva, Jurgen Klopp sported an increasingly quizzical look.

It was the start of December 2015, six weeks into his reign as Liverpool manager, and he had arrived in Switzerland for his side’s final game of the Europa League group stages.

He had arrived for this particularly press conference expecting to preview what would turn-out to be a run of the mill contest with Sion but the agenda had changed.
