Kentucky’s high APR score means Calipari will receive the only bonus in his contract

By now, you’ve heard about the basketball team’s perfect academic progress rate (APR) score of 1,000, but did you know that the score means John Calipari gets a bonus, too? In fact, that’s the only bonus Calipari receives each year, aside from his annual retention bonuses in July.

When Calipari agreed to a contract extension back in 2014, he eliminated all of the on-court performance bonuses, leaving one benchmark each year: $50,000 if his team’s APR score is at least 950. This year’s perfect score of 1,000 means he’s got a little bit more change in his pocket this afternoon.
