Local sports briefs for April 23: Washburn Rural boys golf breaks school record, shoots second-lowest game in state history

Washburn Rural’s boys golf team shot a school-record four-man score of 281 en route to winning Wednesday’s 23-school Free State Invitational at Eagle Bend Country Club by 16 strokes.

Rural’s winning score is believed to be the second-lowest in state history behind Kapaun’s score of 279 recorded in 2010 at McDonald Park.

Rural senior Ryan Clatterbuck took medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68, while freshman Parker Beal finished second with a 69. Senior Andrew Beckler finished sixth (scorecard playoff) with a 71 while junior Lukas McCalla was 10th with a 73. The Junior Blues were 7 under as a team.
