Kansas football coaches work to help young players avoid 'freshman wall'

With the first week of classes beginning, the Kansas football coaches must keep reminding their freshmen of something they’ve been telling them all summer.

When freshmen approach the end of training camp, they are likely to reach a point that coach David Beaty calls “the freshman wall.” Coaching staffs all around the country face similar dilemmas, but the way it is handled is different. At KU, players are given a choice.

“We tell them you can either be a football player or you can be a freshman,” offensive line coach Zach Yenser said. “If an 18-year-old can come and play right away, they’re going to play.
