LAWRENCE — No one likely will ever get University of Kansas forward Hunter Mickelson confused with golfing great Phil Mickelson, but last Friday night KU’s senior had a little something in common with “Lefty.”
The 6-foot-10 Mickelson, who is right-handed and has red hair, hit a left-handed chip shot that pulled the Jayhawks to 2 under late in the third quarter against Canada. The basket cut KU’s deficit to 60-58 and helped spark the team for a fourth-quarter rally as the Jayhawks eventually pulled away for an 87-76 victory.
“Coach stressed putting more energy into the game at halftime, and I tried to that when I was out there and got some breaks,” Mickelson said.
