And yes, last season qualified. Not much went Iowa State’s way, not even the first day of camp. Center Ben Loth tore his ACL. In retrospect it can be seen as an omen. It was the start of an avalanche of injuries, a second straight loss to a FCS team and a winless Big 12 football campaign.

Through it all Cotton-Moya tried to do his part. He would show up in the locker room for another practice, another film session, another whatever he could think of that might help get a victory.
