YPSILANTI, Mich. — Angel Krell scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute and goalkeeper Haley Smith made five saves Friday as the Illinois State soccer team opened the regular season with a 1-1 draw at Eastern Michigan.
Smith, who entered after starter Vanessa Niestrom went untested in the first half, made four of her stops in the final seven minutes of the second overtime. She denied Kristin Nason on three consecutive shots then saved a Lindsey Shira attempt with 34 seconds left to perserve the draw.
The Eagles struck first when Sabrina McNeill volleyed in Nicole Remedios' free kick to the back post just 3½ minutes into the second half.
