Zack Leone doubled in Giovanni Garbella in the top of the ninth inning to lift Valparaiso to a 2-1 victory over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference baseball game Friday night at Duffy Bass Field.
The Redbirds (18-27, 5-11 MVC) had tied the game in the eighth. With two outs, Tyson Hays singled and moved to third on John Rave's single. Owen Miller followed with a run-scoring single to right.
Both teams had eight hits. Rave and Miller each had two hits for ISU.
Valparaiso (17-27, 6-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first. Chase Dawson led off with a double, stole third and scored on Blake Billinger's sacrifice fly.
