Opposing coach praises UI women after loss

CHAMPAIGN — One of the best coaches in the history of women’s basketball likes what she saw from Illinois on Saturday. Her own team? That’s another story.

Basketball Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer watched her Rutgers squad take a big early lead, then have to hold on for a 63-56 victory against the Illini.

Illinois dropped to 8-17 overall and 1-13 in the Big Ten.

“I think they are doing great in that, contrary to their wins and losses,” said Stringer, who has led Rutgers to a pair of Final Fours. “You could have such a down attitude that you lay down and you don’t do anything.
