HOUSTON -- The Astros placed right-hander Samuel Deduno on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a lower back strain in a move that's retroactive to Thursday. His spot on the 25-man roster was taken by right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., who will be making his Major League debut against the A's on Monday at Minute Maid Park.
To make room for McCullers on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred shortstop Jed Lowrie to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day disabled list. Lowrie had thumb ligament surgery and is out until after the All-Star break.
