Packers looking beyond draft to fill roster.

When the Green Bay Packers are scouting for rookies who can make their 53-man roster, they're looking for guys like Oregon State's Ryan Murphy.

General manager Ted Thompson has a strong record unearthing talent through the draft, but he and his scouting staff refuse to turn their noses up on guys who have to thumb a ride into the NFL, continually believing no talent should ever be overlooked.

Murphy, who started 39 games from 2012-'14, didn't have eye-popping numbers for the Beavers, but as a senior he was a team captain, finished second in pass breakups, returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown against USC and was honorable mention all-Pac-12.
